1. Why study in Germany as a foreign student?
You'll receive a first-class education. German universities rank among the top in the world, just below some of the prestigious British universities and the American Ivy League.
The guiding principle of German higher education is "The Unity of Teaching and Research" (also known as the cornerstone of the 'dual educational system'). There is also a strong emphasis on apprenticeship' and student involvement in the application of much of what they have learned and in finding new ways of problem solving (access to cutting-edge research facilities at many universities and fachhochschulen).
Germany is a country and culture that is important to international students. This knowledge will be a huge asset to them, as well as the tons of fun they'll have.
2. What is "Studienkolleg"?
This is a one year preparatory course that must be completed by individuals who want to study at a German higher educational institution, but whose school leave diploma is not sufficient to apply for a degree.
This course provides full-time education for five days per week in all subjects of a degree program and the German language. You can apply for any degree program at any German university if you score a passing grade on the Assessment Examination.
3. What language can I learn in Germany?
Yes. Yes. There are many International Degree Courses that are taught in English, in the first semester at the most. This is for students who don't speak enough German to be able to study in German. There are German language classes offered both before and after the program. Many postgraduate courses (Master's, Ph.D.) can be taught in English.
Go to https://www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/international-programs/de/ and select "English" from the field "Course Language" to find all programs in English!
4. What are the International Degree Courses?
German institutions of higher education have introduced international degree courses with the purpose of helping international students achieve their educational goals in Germany. Instruction is in English with gradually increasing use of German.
These courses are designed to meet high academic standards. They are open to both international and German students.
5. Do international students need to pass the TOEFL and IELTS to be able to enroll in a program taught in English?
You will need to take the TOEFL or IELTS test in order to apply for programs that are entirely taught in English at German universities. However, if you are applying for a postgraduate degree and have a Bachelor's degree in English, you don't need to take TOEFL/IELTS.
6. What is the "Fachhochschulen" and how are they different to a University?
Let's start by mentioning what they share in common: both lead to Masters and Bachelors degrees (or equivalents in Germany). But 'Fachhochschulen don't award Ph.D. titles. To earn a Ph.D., you must attend a postgraduate course at an university.
Universities of Applied Sciences (a.k.a. "Fachhochschulen" are universities of applied sciences. They are designed to maximize the practical application of theoretical knowledge. The vast majority of degrees taught in these schools are in engineering and hard sciences. Business administration programs are also taught at 'Fachhochschulen, though to a lesser degree, while courses in the humanities and social sciences are rare.
7. Are there computer facilities and libraries available at German universities for free?
All German higher education institutions provide internet access and can set up email accounts. They also have well-stocked libraries and archives, which provide many titles that students need to read in order to save money on purchasing books.
